Duma Gideon Boko is leader of the United Coalition of the Opposition Parties in Botswana - the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and leader of the Botswana National Front (BNF Party), a Statesman, successful Advocate of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Botswana, intellectual professor, ardent leader and honorable politician.

 

In 1969, Duma Boko was born in Mahalapye, Botswana and having passion in law earned a Law degree in 1987 from the University of Botswana (UB). After graduating in 1995, he pursued his Masters of Law at Harvard Law School. Later, he imparted his law knowledge at University of Botswana from 1993-2003; while also operating as managing partner at Duma Boko & Co Law Firm. Moreover, he was a member of the Law Society of Botswana, Board of Governors of Botswana Network on Ethics, Law, HIV-Aids and Director of several companies. 

 

Duma Boko has participated as a resource person in many human rights workshops in Southern Africa and carried out various consultancies in Botswana and Southern Africa. As an excelled lawyer, Duma Boko is an activist of human rights, empowering economic networks, collaborating across continents and encouraging diversity. He is a strong advocate of connecting people through people centered development and activism; pioneer of building a meaningful impact at national, regional and international levels for the economic progress of Africa.  

 

Duma Boko’s strong and charismatic visionary leadership led him to emerge as a politician; giving hope to people of Africa to start afresh and renew its vigor. Initially Boko became the leader of the Botswana National Front (BNF) in 2010. His continual struggle led to the establishment of a united opposition political party “Umbrella for Democratic Change” in 2012; later became the Leader of the Opposition in 2014. The Opposition parties in Botswana got a cumulative 53.6% of the popular vote during the 2014 general elections but the ruling BDP retained power because of the country’s first past the post electoral system.

 

Duma Boko is a person of sound credentials and his passion lies in sharing what has inspired him;

“The examined life is a life of love and life of selflessness, and if I die and I have lived the life of sacrifice, my life won’t be in vain.”
